packing it in

Why are the last couple of days before a trip such torture? It's not the anticipation of the trip - although it's certainly there. It isn't the excitement of getting away - although that's certainly there, too. It's not about any of the fun stuff.

It's all about the damned details. My last three days have been about one stupid detail after another. For every one thing I marked off my list, I added another. And a lot of it was stupid stuff. The light in the downstairs bathroom burned out. Could it be a standard size? Noooo. I forgot to call someone to fix my bedroom window, so I have that to look forward to when I get home. There's all the details to get ready for the friend who is house sitting and taking care of the dogs. And the dogs have seen the suitcases come out and are sulking mightily.

I know the instant we hit the road to the airport I'll start really getting excited. But for now I'm just stressed.

Am I the only one who does this?

No, the details drive me to insanity too. I am the only one who seems to keep track of them. Have fun on your trip.

Thanks to my dad, I have to have the house spotless before I leave it on any sort of vacation....Ugh! Like finding enough clean clothes to pack for everyone and then doing it all myself, etc, isn't enough.

i'm always stressed when traveling. probably due to the fact that i'm a MAJOR procrastinator. lists? i do em, and they only help to a certain extent. i'm very disorganized.

No, you're not the only one. getting ready for a holiday is very stressful, I think. You will forget all about the trials & tribulations when you are there, though!

Even when you're totally on top of things, life still has a way of sneaking up on you when you're preparing for a trip. For me, it's always work. I can be not at all busy for weeks and then two days before a trip, I'll get a pile of work that HAS to be done before I leave. Last time, I worked 24 hours in 2 days to get everything done. (And I also need a spotless house before I leave, so it was madness.)

Your fellow travel worriers are legion. Even though I keep a detailed to-do/to-pack list for different types of travel (international, domestic driving, domestic flying) on my computer I'm still in a swivet as we go out the door for fear of forgetting something. Then there was the nightmare of not remembering if I locked the front door as we were halfway to the airport for a 3-week trip abroad and I didn't dare say "Honey, I'm not sure I locked the door". Arrrggghhh

It is just one more huge task for you to organize on top of your already very busy life. Once you get on that plane, drink something with an umbrella in the glass!

I have the same comment as Ped. I go crazy with the details to the point of illness, and I'm the only one who seems to take care of everything. It's maddening.

No you are definitely not the only one RC, I have made getting stressed about getting ready to go on holiday into some sort of art form over the years.

Crazy. I nearly always want to cancel it and not bother, just stay in my spick and span clean home with all the ironing done and veg out, not bothering with the holiday journey or anything.

I usually enjoy it when I'm there though.
