The Thursday Three

Time has been a major issue around here lately. As I'm sure most of you know all too well, sometimes it's impossible to catch up, much less get ahead. I had a lot of time to ponder this Wednesday at my regularly scheduled six week hair appointment. As I sat wrapped in foil I thought about

Indulgences

My definition of this is a little on the loose side. I mean things that you really love, but that come with some sort of a cost - either financial or time or health or any number of other things. They're usually worth it, but sometimes you have to think hard to remember why.

#1. Color weaves. My big indulgence. Maybe it's because I've hated my hair most of my life. Maybe it's because I'm grey before my time. Maybe it's because I've finally started to really like my hair. Whatever the reason, I spend a lot on my hair. My hair is medium brown with streaks of copper, butterscotch and cinnamon and I love it.

What I don't love is the time involved. I'm on a six week schedule - one short appointment and the next one long. Some days, like yesterday, it's time I don't have, and there are a million things I really should be doing instead.

And yet there I sit, with my foil covered head...not giving a damn.

(this is not my hair, by the way).

#2. Fresh flowers. I like fresh flowers. My mom always has a house full of them and I'm a little spoiled by it. But year round flowers in Kansas is a different proposition than year round flowers in California. We're talking pricey.

I do buy them, just not all the time and not as many as I'd like. The FG has been known to show up with an armful of them just because (like earlier this week, as a matter of fact). He banks these Brownie points for a rainy day.

And you know what they say about rain and flowers.

#3. Non-local produce. On one level I really love the idea of eating locally as much as possible. And we do. But the thought of giving up certain things makes limiting myself to only local things impossible.

Meyer lemons
Persimmons
Avocados

I bought a bag full of Meyer lemons last week. They were only slightly less expensive than my haircolor.

But, man, they were out of this world.

I can help you out a bit on that last little indulgence. My parents have persimmon trees on their place down by the Verdigris River Bottom, about a third of the way between you and me.

I'm just beginning to get little stray white hairs over my ears, and I've been thinking about my hair a lot. The trouble is, my girlfriend, the one who did my hair for fifteen years, is in Tulsa. And I haven't found anyone else. I may have to indulge myself a little.

This post really resonated with me...I think I'm going to make some time for a bubble bath now...

I have a pedi lined up for this weekend. If you live without any indulgences, you aren't really living.

My indulgences:
1. Pedicures- Monthly almost year round.
2. Massages - Twice monthly as schedules allow. At least once monthly, no exceptions.
3. Coffee- 16 oz. single, nonfat, decaf vanilla latte that is made by someone who knows what they are doing, not by my beverage challenged self.

I had a good think...and I couldn't come up with anything. I think I need to work on this area of my life!
Fresh flowers used to be a city indulgence of mine, but now I live in rural wilderness, I seem to spend more of my time keeping nature outside of the house.

I'm with you on hte fresh flowers but not the hair colour - I'm too much of a chicken to ever do anything to my hair!

I indulge in ice cream, real, holy ice cream, Batman, like Haagen Daz or Ben and Jerry's.

Naps. There must be time for a nap on a grey winter day. It doesn't have to be long, just a couple of hours.

A nap in front of the fire. Sigh. On the agenda for this afternoon. I can't wait.

Being pregnant, I'm not colouring my hair right now, and the huge shock of white in the front (despite my tender years) is actually starting to look appealing. Or maybe I just don't give a damn anymore.

My indulgences:

Buying produce at the Fresh Market. It's near work, but not near home. The prices are higher than the local megamart, but the fruit is so pretty.

Trashy women's magazines while taking a bubble bath (I can't be intellectual all the time!)

That's about it.

i have been getting my hair foiled about once a year for the last three or four years. i hate having it done. it's so frickin' boring. the worst thing is that they pin the foils so close to my head that i can't wear my glasses, and without my glasses i just sit there like a blind person. i can't read. i just sit. i can't stand it.

if they had little blogging stations, now, i might get the foil work done more often.... but it's two hours and $120, so once a year it is. right now i'm in the stage where i have about three inches of grow-out, so i look like a homeless person. a formerly well-to-do homeless person.

i'm with you on fresh flowers and fresh produce, though. my indulgence: tomatoes.

ooh and pixel-yes on the naps! every sunday at 3.

What are Meyer lemons?

As for indulgences, I'm with you on the hair. I spend more time and money on my hair than ever. I also now have leg and bikini waxes regularly (except in summer when I succumb to the razor). And I like to indulge my appetite for good food now and again.

What DO they say about rain and flowers? The only thing I've heard is that April showers bring Mayflowers! :o)

I need to get serious about my hair...

I indulge myself with my hair, beauty product (if only they made me beautiful!), and shoes.

I'M WORTH IT!!!

Oh and I buy fresh flowers every fortnight but everyone gets the benefit of those. :0

Came here via Kaycie and, like WUASTC, my first thought was 'what are Meyer lemons?' (scuttles off to Google). Hair? Yup, with you all the way there....funnily enough, have just blogged on hair. Mine are seven weeks and a shedload of cash - but by heck, it's worth every penny. janex

Oh Oh - I couldn't come up with anything! What does that mean? Of course I know what it means - but - jeez - I hate to admit it. I love my life as it is!

You totally HAVE to have some indulgences in life. I mean really, what else is life for if it isn't to treat yourself good occasionally! :) That's my 2 cents anyway.

BTW - I'm LOVING your nursing story... I can't wait until you've written the rest of it!

I read a bit of it to hubby last night... I think it not only opened his eyes, but made him think carefully about how he plans to treat the nurses when we deliver. :) I plan to provide treats to the nurses after the birth - I'm thinking now he better understands why. :)

RC, I'm with you on the hair color even though I have to take some grief from friends who are grey and the same age. Now ificould look like Emmylou Harris with that silver flowing mane that would be one thing, but that's not my luck.

It's Meyer lemon time here as well. I freeze the juice in ice cube trays to help with upping the water drinking. They'll be gone soon--sad.

RC, what's a meyer lemon? They haven't reached this corner of London yet (or at least, not the non-US-expat community part of it).

My indulgences are, in no particular order: Diet Coke (at to hell with the aspartame), chocolate (preferably alongside the Diet Coke so the calories are off-set. What, you didn't know that Diet Coke destroys all the calories in a Snickers? You do now...), lie ins (these only really happen when Husband and I get away for the odd weekend, dammit), and decent moisturizer. Although that last is an essential, really, rather than an indulgence...

Hmmm. Maybe I should start buying fresh flowers. I like that idea!

My indulgences:

hair cuts
Clinique facial products
my two cashmere sweaters - I love them!

I get my hair cut every six weeks. I love having someone mess with my hair, the shampoo and the head massage and everything.

I only drink coffee from my Senseo machine. It is a little pricey, but ever so much better than regular coffee and I am worth it.

Chocolate chip cookies, which are pretty pricey here in the Netherlands, but they are so good and mouthwatering that I eat too many of them and regret it afterwards, but, boy, do they taste good.
