hen party

I'm hosting this week's Chick Flick night and I need help. The hostess picks the movie for the evening, and the group of gals I'm doing this with know me pretty well. They're all completely expecting something of the Hugh persuasion, but I'd like to go a different route. Just because. I know I'm predictable and they know I'm predictable, but I'm on an ongoing mission lately to step out of my comfort zone. And a Chick Flick night without Hugh? Waaaay out of the comfort zone.

Has anybody rented something good lately that you'd recommend? Have any oldies but goodies? I know we've gone down the CF road before, but the pickings are constantly changing. ( And yes, laurie, I can hear you screaming Persuasion from here). It's in the running - or would be if I could find it.

Anyone? This is your big chance to put Hugh in his place.

I'm not sure if it's classed as a chick flick but I watched Maid in Manhattan the other night....what a great feel-good film that is...and it does have Ralph Fiennes in it!

"Only you"? Classic robert downey jr and italy chick flick combo.

Serendipity maybe?

I always like an epic but maybe not so good for a coop of chicks, but Fried Green Tomatoes or The English Patient - and a box of kleenex of course. Enjoy!!

1. Like Water for Chocolate, or
2. Monsoon Wedding, or
3. Steel Magnolias

What about HARRY POTTER - not really in the chick flick category but fun anyway.

The Jane Austen Book Club is good also that old favourite 'Dirty Dancing' Patrick Swayze always does it for me - he can put me in the corner any time!

ahem. i am not screaming. i do not scream. but i also do not believe that you can't find CIARAN HINDS IN PERSUASION.

fine. don't listen to me. as i quietly and politely and in an entirely reasonable manner suggest CIARAN HINDS IN PERSUASION.

i agree with flutterby that "monsoon wedding" is great.

but if you're going to tell me that some fairly obscure indian movie is easier to find than CIARAN HINDS IN PERSUASION i will just have to shake my head at you.

I just saw PS I love you. Completely a chick flick. Hubby and son wanted no part of it. But I enjoyed it. It has Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler in it. I did not think he could be that sexy since I saw him in 300 (all digital), but he really brings a certain appeal. Have some kleenex handy.

Have fun!

Absolutely anything with John Cusack in it. High Fidelity, Serendipity, Identity, Grosse Point High. Honey, he acts Hugh Grant into the ground. Hugh does effete exceedingly well, but John, well, words escape me.

hey, you could also try "northanger abbey" for goofy gothic-parody fun. the hottie is cute but not a memorable hottie, in my book... but then i didn't think hugh grant was terribly memorable, either.

Thanks ladies. Those are some great suggestions. It's always nice to know that I'm not alone in my chick flick kingdom.

Steel Magnolias, Monsoon Wedding and Say Anything were all on my initial list. Also I was thinking My Big Fat Greek Wedding or Working Girl. Now I have to rethink. And Dirty Dancing kicked off the brand spanking new Chick Flick night, because...well, why try to fight a masterpiece? (It was even better because one of our group had NEVER seen it. Yikes!)

I'm off to the video store, laurie. I'm really glad you don't scream. You could scare someone if you did.

how about 27 dresses or fever pitch? i also like my big fat greek wedding.

How about something deep and moving and serious? Paradise Road. It's very sad, though, so don't say I didn't warn you.

For Chickflickery, how about The Holiday? It's all about two women who do a house-swap between urban California and rural England. Doesn't speak to me personally at all, of course. As a film, it's a load of rubbish, but very watchable.

Happy Birthday, SIXTEEN year old girl!!!!!!(and of course, the sixteen year old BOY, too).

Iota - I loved The Holiday. Absolutely implausible, but a lot of fun.

What about How to make an American Quilt?

I know. I'm just a big old softy.

Actually, I'm not that big. Or old.

Terms of Endearment, unless you don't want to watch a philanderous husband.

How about The Horse Whisperer? It didn't bring tears to my eyes, but a lot of people seemed to like it.

How about an empowering chick flick? Add Patrick Swayze in a role you'll hate him for and you have Death Proof. I couldn't stop watching it. Loved the a$$ whooping.

I haven't watched a chick flick for ages. Don't forget to tell us what you choose eventually and have a great night!

omgosh...27 dresses, truth about cats & dogs (from the 90s but i can watch it over & over again), bridget jones's diary (yes, i know hugh's in it, but he's not the reason to watch it...it's my dream man colin firth that ya gotta pay attention to :) ) Pride & Prejudice the BBC version w my dream man...of course you would have to be able to sit through two dvds lol how bout knocked up? not really a chick flick i guess...well sort off...but a comedy. someone suggested fever pitch, but how bout never been kissed? there are just too many...but you'll never run out of choices, eh?

marti-gerard can be sexy all the time..man, he was even sexy as the phantom *sigh*

laurie said...

ick. dirty dancing. ick ick ick.

i'm sorry about the pancreatic cancer and all, but i just do not like patrick swayze.

i keep picturing him dancing with chris farley... and i get them all mixed up.

I was going to say The Holiday too. Totally wrong season, but I thought it was really cute.

Other soppy ones from my "Movies I Would Recommend List":

13 Going on 30
A Walk to Remember
About a Boy
Amelie
Before Sunrise/set
Greenfingers
Lost in Translation
The Noteboook
The Prince & Me

Another suggestion though it is way too late for this hen party (maybe next time): Chicago.

Reason? An excuse to cut loose and everybody dance to "All That Jazz"!

I just would like to second a few that have been mentioned as EXCELLENT CF movies: Calendar Girls, Only you, Serendipity, Fried Green Tomatoes, How to Make an American Quilt,13 going on 30, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook.

One to add to the excellent mix that hasn't been mentioned. Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood.
