heads or tails?

This weekend is potentially going to be a landmark of sorts. It will be the first time the boys (the two younger ones anyway) will be spending the weekend at their dad's - and I will have two days off of work. Always before, I've arranged my work schedule so that when they were gone I'd be at work. It just seemed easier all around. Sasquatch will be in and out all weekend, and I'm sure I'll have sleeping over teenagers, but for some reason that's different. He's so self-sufficient (when he chooses to be) and even with a house full of his friends I can still do whatever it is that I want to do.

And there's the million dollar question. What will I do this weekend? The forty eight hours or so in front of me are frighteningly quiet, but dizzily alluring at the same time. What will I do this weekend?

I had thought about painting my bedroom some super girly color. My buddy Laurie and I had planned a painting day, complete with that most crucial of ingredients - a cold bottle of wine. I had also thought about trying to spend the weekend writing, which has a lot of appeal. Or I could sleep until noon and get take-out sushi for dinner. Or eat mint chip ice cream for breakfast. Or never get off of my sofa and watch Chick Flicks all weekend. (At least until the teenagers arrive in front of the XBox and I have to retreat to my bedroom). I could go to the gym and sit in the sauna, which I adore. The possibilities are endless. What will I do this weekend?

Then a while ago I opened a group work email and there was a very polite and understated plea for people to volunteer to pick up shifts this weekend, since we're very understaffed at the moment. Of course there are several day shifts open on Saturday and Sunday, so I've been wrestling with my conscience for the last hour or so. Should I go to work one day this weekend and pick up about twelve hours of overtime pay? Or two days and shoot for twenty four hours of premium pay? Or stick to my guns and have a weekend for me?

What should I do?

Hmmmm. Even if you pick up one day, you could still write, have mint chip for dinner or breakfast, and watch all the movies you want. If you pick up two shifts there won't be any time for you, so I don't advise doing that.

Do like Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue: Take the money and run.

spend the money on your other day off.

Half and half sounds good, money and rest. Save your conscience and your sanity!! :) Have a great weekend.

Self-sufficient or not - teenage boys home alone? Hmmmmm.

That aside, your work days are hectic enough but having a little extra green in your pocket is nice. I'm with Pamela, one shift for work and the rest for you.

I agree with the others, split the difference. One day for making money, one day for treating yourself, honey.

That's the practical side of me. The impractical side says tell everyone to piss off for the weekend and do whatever you want.

If you need the extra cash, I would work atleast one day shift. If I needed the me time more than the cash, then I wouldn't work.
Sorry I wasn't much help, but that's how I would decide.

i suspect you've already decided.

but here's my vote anyway: life is short. go for a bike ride

Take BOTH days for yourself. Think about what you're trading for money. You. Use that list you made of all the things you want to do, prioritize (sometimes as soon as we list it, we realize it sounds better than actually doing it would be) and enjoy. Definitely do NOT work more than one day if you feel you have to work at all.

I would take some quiet time to start on the book and maybe work the other say, you need the rest . I want to see that book come out in the next year! Maybe present it like a journal and the next one a novel, that people just think is fiction! KC Ginny

There is something to be said for lollygagging. Uncle Sam is going to snag a huge part of your OT anyways so I vote for R & R.

What's more important to you right now - the money or some me time?

Do whatever you need to so you will not feel bad about what you are doing.

I hope you take at least one of the days off.

You know RC - eventually - after the years have crept by and you've worked yourself to the bone and your days are drawing down....you're going to think - I wish I had taken more time for me.

naaaaaaaaaaaaaa - don't do it, don't work. Face yourself and RELAX girl. I still remember when you got overtired not so long ago. You NEED your time off.

Week-end for you, no contest. You need it. And if you feel like a complete spare part, and don't know what to do with yourself, then you'll know for next time this situation arises - but I suspect not.

I am anal and goal oriented, so my choice would be to do the paint and wine party with your friend.

Then asauge your guilt by working on your book... in reality the book will lead to income, therefore it isn't an indulgence at all!

Then watch 'Shirley Valentine', or 'Mrs. Henderson Presents'!! Just stay away from the ER, the moon is too full to be working this weekend!
