The Thursday Three

Today's list is...

Three things I am really embarrassed to admit that I really like.

and when I say really...I mean really. Really.

Exhibit A.

The Bay City Rollers. Might as well start off with a bang. But wait, it gets worse. It was bad enough that I was a tartan wearing teeny-bopper, but as an adult I still listen to them when no one else is around. Maybe it's the fact that it makes me feel twelve again, maybe it's that it was a simpler time. Maybe it's just that I have no taste. I don't wear tartan anymore, if that's any consolation.

As stupid as it sounds The Bay City Rollers were my teenage rebellion. My step-father when I was growing up in LA was a studio and touring musician and he worked with a lot of world class acts. If I'd adored the Rolling Stones or the Pretenders (which as a matter of fact I secretly did) it would have been a given that I at least had some musical taste. But the BCR drove him nuts. He would say, through gritted teeth, "Can they at least hit one of the notes they're trying to hit?" Teenage mission accomplished. I can't quite explain why I still (very occasionally) listen to them and sing along - off key of course.

Exhibit B.

Salt on fruit. You can blame my Alabama grandmother for this, but I love salt on fruit. Apples, melon, oranges and grapefruit, but especially watermelon. Oh my god, do I love salt on watermelon. I try to not do it, because I know all that salt isn't good for you. I just eat it plain like a good girl. Most of the time.

But when no one is looking...watch out.

Exhibit C.

Reality Television. Not all of it - I do have some taste. (After reading this far you may doubt that, but I do. Really). I don't like the super cheesy shows like The Bachelor and the ones like Please Marry My Dad, but I do have a few favorites. I like Survivor and American Idol and most of the Bravo shows, but especially Project Runway. I watch some of these shows with my kids and it's a lot of fun to argue and debate about them. Top Chef is the show of the moment. My kids are really big on any show they can keep on for background noise and then as soon as it's over turn to me and ask me what happened. Sometimes I tell them the truth and sometimes I scramble it all up in the hope that eventually they'll watch it themselves. Right. Like that's going to happen.

Well, there you go. Thanks to those who gave me ideas for the list. In the end I decided not to do any of them because we all do similar lists and I started to feel really bad about taking all those good ideas for myself. And besides, I want to read what other people come up with.

Okay people, fess up. What are your guilty pleasures?

As if being branded with a nickname by my child wasn't bad enough...*grumble*

1. Celebrity Fit Club
Yes, I admit it. I like watching D-list celebrities humiliate themselves, but I like the fact that they all redeem themselves and get healthy.

2. Rick Astley. Shut up. He was my Bay City Rollers, okay?

3. Jean Auel. She of Clan of the Cave Bear. The series is a little trashy (paleo-porn, anyone?), but...oh, stop looking at me that way. I read them in my house where no one can see.

Thanks, RC, I can now guarantee I'll be the laughing stock of the internet!

WOW. The picture of the Bay City Rollers really questions that you are using your internet to it's fullest extent.

OK....Here goes...

#1- Fried Chicken, but only the fried parts! I peel everyones skin off and eat it while I am dishing it up, giving them the skinless chicken while the grease runs down the side of my mouth.

#2- Kathy Griffin- My Life on the D List. Ok. I have put aside sex for this show.

#3- Broadway Show Tunes. NO, I am not a gay man...

LOVE YOU!!!!

Ahh these are so funny.

But we can all blush together.

I'm struggling to think of stuff though, mainly because I'm a bit of a Phoebe. If I like stuff other people don't it doesn't bother me too much.

Hmmmm, Ok, here goes...

1. I really like one of my 6 year olds TV shows. It's called 'Jane and the Dragon'. I think it's Canadian, but we have it in the UK now and I just think it's so cute.

My 6 year old is less bothered about it now but I still watch it.
That's a bit sad isn't it?

2. I don't have a Bay City Rollers thing I don't think, as I liked New Kids on the Block but I don't anymore. I think it was all those teenage hormones...
I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I really like McFly though.
Again the 6 year old loves them, but hey, what's not to like? Cute men (ok, boys), basically good songs, and lots of cheekiness. And I'm not old enough to be their mum yet, I checked, I was aged between 10 and 12 when they were all born. So there.

3. Ok, I've got a grown up one here.
I really like sherry. My mum always had a glass when she cooked Sunday dinner and I used to have a little sip. I loved the warm sweetness of it.
I still think it tastes ok now, but I only ever drink it at mum's. I would be far too embarrassed to buy a bottle myself, or order it at a bar.
It just seems a bit too grey hair and crinoline.

I'm sure I have more guilty pleasures, but there tho only ones I'm admitting to right now.

I just want to say a big HI, because I thought I was the only person in the entire world who like salt on melon.

Have you ever tried chilli on pineapple? I had it in Sri Lanka, where it's the norm... It was one of the nicest things I've ever tasted.

Thanks to you all for your comments. Sorry I'm so late getting back to you. I love reading about everyone elses guilty secrets. It makes me feel less crazed.

jen - I think we'll all be laughing stocks, don't you?

HITA - you would think with all the dirt I could spill on you that you'd leave the Rollers out of it.

jo- I wish I was more like Phoebe. I'm a Monica type.

iota - thanks for stopping by. Salt lovers unite!

stratford girl - I haven't had chili on pineapple, but I have had it on other sweet things. I'll have to try it!
