Fun Monday #8

This week's Fun Monday is being hosted by kitten and here's what she wants from us -

I think it would be neat to hear about the story behind your home and the road you live on. It doesn't have to be historical, maybe just something that stands out to you. It would be nice to have pictures to go with your little story. I also would like to know who has the oldest house. Whoever has the oldest house will get a little Christmas treat from little ole me.

This is my street earlier this week after we had gotten about five inches of snow.

This is my house. Interestingly enough it doesn't sit on my street. I have one of those old neighborhood addresses where the house faces one street but has the address of the one on the side of it. Very confusing for pizza delivery people.

This is my middle son pretending to shovel snow when in actuality he is constructing a snow fort for the ages on the side of the house. His brother, about to walk out the front door, is soon to find out about the snow fort. The hard way.

I've talked about my house a lot, so I'm a little worried people are sick of hearing about it. It's a style called Folk Victorian and it was built in 1887. We were married in 1987 so I've always loved that symbolism. There was a major remodel done in 2000 which changed a lot of things in the house in interesting ways. There are stairways outside leading to nothing, the basement stairs are backwards and someone made a period fireplace surround Art Deco. On purpose. I want so badly to learn the history of this house, but it hasn't happened yet. It will. Like the rest of my family my house is quite the character.

But here is the most important thing about my house. This is the house I have dreamed of my entire life. This street is the street I fantasized about for years but couldn't manage. Sometimes I feel like I literally created this house out of the sheer force of my desire. It's not a Craftsman style - still my favorite. But it's airy and light and every morning of my life when I walk down the stairs for the first time I get this wave of absolute joy that it's ours.

It needs work. It needs paint. It needs that Art Deco surround gone.

And I...

...need it.

I love your house too! I am jealous of your house. And I am glad that you love your house so much.

We are opting to make the current house, the house of our dreams. But it doesn't have that charm and character that old houses have.

And Craftsman is my favorite style too.

1887, wow that's really something. You are so lucky to be living in the house you want on the street you want. Very few people can say that.

I love your house RC. I never get tired of seeing other peoples homes, especially when they are so full of character (and characters.)

Your house looks just like the American Dream house to me. Pah! Who needs Craftsman? (Whatever that may be...)

PS - when I say American Dream, I don't mean the movie, btw. I mean the real McCoy, what I imagine on those occassions we think about life in the US. Phew. Is that clear, now?

Looks like a fabulous house and yes you are so lucky to be living somewhere you love. Doesn't it make a hell of a difference?!

It's a lovely house, RC. I think old houses are wonderful.

I love the Craftsman style, too. My great grandmother lived in one when I was little, and I always wanted it.

I love your house! I love Victorian houses, you can tell yours has that beautiful, airy, specialness about it. So much character! Did you ever catch that show on one of those home remodeling stations, If Walls Could Talk? It would be so interesting to know the history.
I don't think I could ever get tired of hearing about your house, really. Some houses are just so fasinating to me! Love the 1887, that seems like fate.

It's a lovely house. I've seen some great houses on today's blogs. Yours will have so much history just waiting to be released. Wouldn't mind hearing about it when you finally get round to doing the homework.

I think the house looks very cute! I love older homes - they have so much character already. Adding a little more makes them better!

They just don't make em like that anymore, do they? My house was built in 1890, a Victorian villa. It's got lots of character and history, and I love that about it, as you must about yours.

how totally beautiful! (and i'll come help your son with the snow fort!)

I've never had the pleasure of building a snow fort. I've lived in Atlanta my entire life. I could probably build a pollen fort in the spring though!

Your house is just beautiful! It remdinds me of the houses in central Illinois where my mom grew up.

Your house is so sweet..but I'm curious about these stairs to nowhere...and the stairs put in the wrong way! I thought stairs were hard to mess up...shows what I know! You may have the oldest house for this Fun Monday!

laurie said...

we have a door to nowhere in our house.

it's a tiny wooden door on the landing, halfway up the stairs. at one time, there were back stairs that went down into the kitchen, but they were ripped out many, many years ago. the door remains. it doesn't open. (if it did, you would walk right into the back of a cabinet.)

it mystifies people.

I can see why you love your house. It looks pretty in the snow. Old houses are full of character and how lovely that you got your dream house.

So many beautiful houses in this Fun Monday edition! They all have their own special character. Yours looks very much like one in the little town nearby. I've always loved that house.
