the mock turtle

Saturday afternoon we did something we've never done before. We went and watched Gumby perform in his very first play - Alice in Wonderland - at our local Art Center. It was pretty cute and, even though he had a rough bout of stage fright beforehand, he did really well. It's almost enough to make me post pictures of it. Or, worse for all of you, video.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thrilled that one of my kids is following in both of his parent's drama geek footsteps. But I didn't push this on him. (Just like I didn't push the tennis lessons on him. Hmmm. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thrilled that one of my kids is following in my tennis geek footsteps. Hmmm. He picked those on his own, too).

I really didn't force this on him. I don't operate that way. Honest. Every season when we get the class schedule, my kids pick something that looks good to them. Surfer Dude has been doing ceramics for a while and really enjoys it. They've each taken a film production class. (Irony there, I know. It's like a bakers kid taking a class on breadmaking). But this time Gumby said he wanted to take a drama class. I said that would be fine and then I went into the other room and did my happy dance (which does not look like I'm having a seizure, I don't care what my husband says).

He seemed to like the class a lot, but I knew that the performance was the test as far as if he wanted to continue. We'd rehearsed his lines over and over for the last few days, but when I drove him to his final dress rehearsal he was a little jittery. At the beginning of the play you could tell that he was not as comfortable as he could be, but as it went on he loosened up considerably. By the end he was actually enjoying himself.

When we met up with him after the play was over he had a huge smile on his face. When asked how he felt he said

I can't wait to do that again. It was awesome!

Is the drama geek gene dominant or recessive?

It's OK to mock a turtle, they've got thick skins

Yeah, Gumby! And yeah that you get to watch him do something that you really enjoy.

Sounds like a fun adventure.

Yesterday, I was all thumbs too and couldn't hold on to a thing. It must have been something in the air.

i'm glad gumby had a great time doing the play.

now i'm not sure if 'drama queens' are included in the drama dept. but i'm sure my ex would say that gene came from me lol

Brilliant - I'm so pleased he enjoyed it. It's a great feeling being up on stage in front of an audience. Pure adrenaline.

For those of us who could never speak in public for any reason, a drama class sounds like Hades on earth.

But I think the drama gene is recessive....but since you and FG both have it, Gumby got it too.

Good for him for enjoying it and doing well! Let us know how his first screening at Dreamworks goes.

I used to love watching my boys in school plays etc. I used to be in school plays too - Dad always thought I'd end up on the stage - mmmm not sure if that was a compliment or not!

you know, i think it always makes parents feel like they've done something right when their kids emulate them in some ways. my dad loved that i was a writer, too. my good friend p.miller is pleased that her son wears tie-die and is a flaming liberal who loves bob dylan.

it's affirmation, not only of the thing they emulate, but also of your parenting skills.

so take a bow, RC. you too, film geek. you're doing a great job, and your kids are letting you know that.

How could you not do the spazzy happy dance when one of your kids decides that something you love is something they'd also be interested in?

Wouldn't you secretly be thrilled if one of your kids went into medicine of some sort? I would.

I love that he loved it!!! I wish you could post pictures. My kids have so much fun when they are on stage, and I don't have a drama bone in my body. I love watching them, and afterwards they are sooooo happy. Sounds like a great afternoon.
XOXO

Clearly the dominant gene, RC - so watch out for your other kids...

Film geek/tennis geek - what a great choice! Think those are both good genes, lucky kid.

We've always known that was lurking in Gumby somewhere. So glad he had a great time, and you did, too. Who was more nervous, you or him? I'd sit through the video!

Dominant. All my kids are pretty geeky.

Oh fab. I really hope Misses E and M like writing like I do. They both love books so that's a start. Laurie is so right.
