this is your brain...

A patient who came in with completely unknown (and completely active) TB, who upon further chart searching had a long history as a violent stalker, necessitating stints in both a state psychiatric facility and a federal prison. He told me I was the nicest nurse he had ever had.

A step-dad who made his wife and biological son watch as he poured tabasco sauce into the mouth of his five year old step-child. When he tired of that little game, he bit the child all over until his jaw hurt. Mom started crying, so he beat the hell out of her. When they came in, the five year old said "Dad threw mom into a wall. It was cool."

A drunken, suicidal midget who flashed every cop who entered her room. (And there lot of them). It took seven people to hold her down to medicate her, while she screamed at the top of her lungs for either her attorney or George W. Bush to come and save her.

You can't make this shit up.

And that was just an ordinary day!
How do you manage to keep your self control when you see little kids treated like that?

It's a good thing I wasn't allowed alone in the room with that tobasco guy.

I know right where the bottle would end "up"

You make my Unit seem like Care Bear Land!

Here's wishing you peace and a giant chalkboard eraser!

Man's inhumanity to man! You never can tell what hell some people are living in can you? How do you cope with all this, especially when children are involved?

Whenever I think there's something wrong with my world, I come here, and thank my lucky stars I don't work in healthcare.

Scenario One: Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Scenario Two: State sponsored sterilization and immediate neuromuscular blockade. While down, pull his teeth.

Scenario Three: I hope you called George to save her. It sounds like only he could have understood this poor soul.

HI RC

Your day made mine look insignificant. I cannot imagine what you go through. You are a tough person. One of the many things I admire about you...

Stunned. You'd think I'd be less naive about human behavior at my age and after teaching middle school for 11 years but it still astounds/sickens/saddens me what human beings do to each other.

I'd have loved to have given that guy with the tabasco bottle a lethal shot! How do you stand it honey?

Tabasco guy never came in. He had been dragged off to jail before the police brought the rest of his family in. His wife refused protective services. They could only hold him for 24 hours in jail. We never found out if she had actually been willing to press charges after they left.

How do I handle it? I go outside and kick brick buildings until my toes throb. I come home and hug my kids tight. I do everything in my power not to let it make me crazy.

And I fail...

Next time anyone complains to me about their job, I'll quote your post. That second one was truly awful, I bet (though the flashing midget probably was truly awful for the cops).

I love your brain, but no you're right, I couldn't make that up.

And I thought human resources was a wild ride. Sheesh!

the law was changed here to enable the police to press charges if the spouse wouldn't and where were the child protective agencies? I felt sick reading your post and the 5 year old, is there even a hope?
Thanks for the post, blessings to you and your compassionate heart.

Thank God we have people like you that copes with these things the rest of would balk at.

Whaaaat? I'm scared, horrified, angry, enraged, upset and weirded-out. All in one post. I can't believe the stuff you deal with. Tobasco guy actually makes me feel a little sick to my stomach. How awful awful awful. If I got near him he wouldn't have teeth anymore. My boot would be so far inside his mouth he'd have to read the label by looking up his asshole (sorry but I'm enraged!) I'm not a violent person, but facing a child abuser could turn me pretty quick.

Keep us posted if TB guy returns. I don't want to have to worry about you!!

I'm sorry you have to face that kind of crap on a daily basis. What the hell is wrong with people? Thanks to you and other nurses like you for the work you do. Hugs.
