step away from the keyboard

Amen, sister.

Thank you all for listening to me yesterday. I know better than to blog after work as it always seems like I'm about to jump off a cliff. And really, I'm not. Really, I'm a pretty darn happy Gemini most of the time. But I veered from my ritual last night. Normally I come home from work, figuratively take the phone off the hook, hug my family and take a deep breath. Or two. But last night two of my kids were out and so was my husband. Surfer Dude fell asleep watching TV, so guess what I did? I took my day out on the keyboard. (And all of you). I need some sort of a blogging 12 step where they take away your internet access until you're de-stressed.

And thanks for all the comments too. You're all right, of course. (Except willowtree, who needs to brush up on his Queen lyrics). It's wonderful to have a job you're passionate about. It's great to have balance in your life between work and home, and I really think that normally I do. I am absolutely not a workaholic. I go the opposite. I live for days off. The problem right now is that I've been picking up a lot of extra shifts because we're so short staffed. I know what my psyche can handle and what it can't and right now I'm tipping into too many hours. I've got to fix that. I think the word I'm looking for is NO. (Now having said that, I'm going in the next two days to cover open shifts. Let's practice...NO. NO. All together now). NO. It has quite a nice ring to it, don't you think? All firm and forceful.

We've finally gotten the computer room downstairs painted and it feels fabulous. I'm covered in paint, but that's okay. It's a good color on me. The shade is called something very la di da, but in my head I call it Granny Smith Green. Very fresh and springy. I even got the FG to take the monstrosity desk out to the garage, so tomorrow when I put the furniture back in I can rearrange and make it feel like a completely new room. That only leaves one room to paint downstairs before they're all done. Jeez, and it's only taken sixteen months.

Ever forward...

Glad you are feeling better!! Uh, I've been asking my family who have the summer off to paint the hallway for the last five years. The kitchen for three. Much of the kitchen, maybe even most of the kitchen got painted last summer (2006), but what is left, I have a feeling I'll be retired and painting it myself before it gets finished.

hey, blogs are good for venting because you know that we are here to listen. venting is better than the alternative that's for sure....i tend to hold stuff in until i'm one fuse shy of blowing up...then someone lights it and it's not very pretty lol

wow, you got a lot of rooms painted...i've been in this house 14 months and have only done two (the girls' rooms) and i don't even work! it's that damn lazy gene i tell ya!

We've been in our new house since the end of July. I still have boxes in the dining room, boxes in the little guy's room, and artwork still leaning against walls because I can't decide where to put it. And paint? That is not even happening anytime soon.

Glad you're doing so well tonight.

Don't apologize for the day before. You are well loved and well liked always. It doesn't matter what sort of mood you are in. You are really a cheerful person, no matter which mood, so don't worry.

Love the name of your blog! I've recently discovered you and am enjoying the read.

Striking a balance between work and home. Striking a balance - always a topic that seems to come up...daily. I'm currently trying to get my head around the idea of going back to work after being a stay at home mom for almost 4 years. It is tough to contemplate, but getting easier as I step out into the world and job hunt. It sounds like you get a great deal out of working, despite frustrations at times. I will hope for that.

Oh, and if you need to learn to say NO, please come over to my house. It is such a POPULAR word that I blogged about it today.

you nutball. as if you ever have to apologize to us for anything. (except if you stopped blogging. then you'd have to come crawling to us.)

i just know that, for me, there's no excitement like the rush i get when it's election night on deadline, or the I-35 bridge has collapsed, or someone has shot a cop in st paul and i'm there til midnight editing the lede story and new information is flowing in....

yeah, you go home wiped out and then have to get up and go back the next day. and no, i couldn't do that every single day. but ... i like a job that reminds you you're alive.

Hey you rant all you want honey - we're good listeners.

You'll feel great when you get your computer room all cozy and nice. x

Hey, how dare you go all coy and apologetic? It was YOU who taught me the value of venting in the first place. I seem to remember you said something along the lines of "who wants to hang out with Mary Poppins?" To you I say "who wants to hang out with Florence Nightingale?"

Get it all out. We blogees can take it (and actually we enjoy it, you know).

You sound a lot more positive in this blog! I can't wait to get my new office sorted out, what a good feeling that will be.

RC, you were then when I needed to vent young lady, and so many other people here. it's one of the best things about blogging because you can really get your thoughts in order and put them out there and see what response you get.

You are a warm, funny, passionate, fair and sarky lady and we wouldn't have you any other way.
Chill, have that wine and choc from pixel.

We love you loads.

Oh and, NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

Please feel free to vent as much as you want. Blogs are good for that sometimes, we are here for you. God knows you have been listening to me vent away, and I can't tell you how much it has helped me. Let me/us do the same for you. Work can really make us crazy at times, even if we work with great people and love what we do.
I am going to try to get some painting done here. It makes me feel so good when the room is done. I currently have 3 rooms ready to go, but haven't picked up a roller or brush. I am thinking about surprising Melanie and having her room ready/painted by the time she gets home. She has been asking ever since we moved in, 3 years ago!
Thanks so much for your caring comment. Major hugs to you. I mean it.
XOXO
