Well, this is going to be an early post, and a quick one at that, as I have a line behind me of kids who have all left their homework until the last minute. And what do they get as penance for this? They get to sit and cool their jets while I blog. See what you get for procrastinating, boys?
I did want to let you all in on the earth shattering news, however. After months of agonizing and rationalizing and debating all the pros and cons I've finally made a decision. Angels will sing and the media will herald the news.
Today I'm joining a gym.
I've finally gotten fed up with looking like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man. Actually that isn't totally true. I'm relatively fit. It's hard to not be when you have a job where you walk an average of eight miles in a twelve hour shift. It's the jiggling and wiggling that's getting to me.
So in an attempt to Stop the Jiggle, I'm going to start exercising again. And eating right. And all those other really fun things. Ugh. I want ice cream just thinking about it.
I'm counting on you guys to keep me honest. I haven't figured out how yet, but I'll think of something.
And now back to the regularly scheduled (but tape delayed) homework.

It's good to make promises in your blog, if you are a little bit honest, you'll mostly stick to them, unless you can find really good excuses not to and rationalize them away. You can break a promise once, but not twice, that's my rule for me. Good luck exercising!
i started exercising on treadmill and eating differently at the beginning of the year...all was good for the 1st month, i lost 5lbs. for ppl with thyroid issues like me that's an accomplishment in itself. but yes, i gained that 5lbs back because i had that dbl edged sword looming over me. too tired to exercise, but need energy to do anything at all. i have been sitting here the last 3 days thinking i am WAY beyond the staypuft mallowman and need to start up again. there's no one really here to support me or exercise w me. i would LOVE to join a gym so someone can give some direction, but that can't happen right now. so maybe, just maybe, we can be each other's support and track our progress through our blogs?? what do ya think?
Hubby and I sat our home gym up yesterday. It's not too much, just a treadmill, a bowflex and a few free weights. It's ready to go. I opened the french doors today and looked at the equipment. Then I did laundry, baked bread and snickerdoodles, and sat on the sofa to watch Monday Night Football with hubby where I promptly fell asleep.
Maybe tomorrow.
The hardest part is getting in the habit. I found that a buddy was the only way I could keep exercising. I needed the social aspect.
Of course she had a thing for exercising at O'dark thirty and I just don't do mornings. So after a year... and I still haven't gotten back on the bandwagon.
Loved the house blog, my hubby and I lived in 500sf for the first 5 years of marriage. We loved our first house we bought. But the one bathroom did it in. We have people that think we're nuts for living in a 1800sf with 2 kids. "It's just not big enough." Yes it is, thank you very much. I'm not moving, I'm remodeling.
Lastly, thanks so much for award. My very first, you beat Laurie by a nose. I'm glad my crazy life can make you smile. :)
Good luck with the exercising thing. And a little ice cream is always okay. Your mental health needs it!
Don't look to me for support, I haven't changed channels since I lost the remote.
Oh, there's an award for you at my place.
Good luck.
I joined a gym in Paris last October and I've used it about 4 times.
I only joined the gym because I was at work and there was a great, cheap deal being offered. Hah, not so cheap now.
I do cycle about 4 or 5 times a week so I guess I wasn't thinking straight when I joined the gym.
good for yo9u, correspondent. I hate teh gym but I have a hyperactive dog to keep me fit and that helps! Keep us posted!
Well, I LOVE the gym. I joined one after shoulder surgery six years ago. I go twice a week. I find classes are better for me because of the competitive angle. If left to my own devices, I don't work very hard. I do spin circuits, total tone (also known as total torture with weights), spin again, and thai bo. I'm nearly 48 and have the pulse of someone half my age (though I do still jiggle a bit). I have gym buddies I've met through my classes, and I trained with one of them for a 5K run in June. Good luck. And have fun.
i hate to tell you this, but ..... the jiggle don't stop.
rOk RC, you've now got a gym buddy - me! Don't even think about not going because I am going to check up on you and I expect you to do the same for me. And don't let me eat cake either.
My jiggling has got to the point where once it gets going, it's impossible to stop (a bit like an ocean liner trying to do an emergency stop - it just aint happening).
So there we are, we will be LOVELY before long.
Put down that biscuit, right now!
Best wishes,
:)
Well done sweetie.
I am looking into joining a gym myself at the minute.
Or at least doing my 10 000 steps a day with my pedometer...
it's so hard when you don't have a form of exercise that you naturally love isn't it?
Maybe we should invent a new sport that involves wine and chocolate. We'd all be so fit.
Good luck babes, but don't be too hard on yourself either.
Good luck, RC, it takes courage to let everyone in the blogosphere know of your exercise regime.
I have an elliptical trainer, although it's been getting precious little use lately. And Laurie's right, you know, there will always be a little jiggle. Unless you have it all suctioned off.
Good luck RC. Since I stopped working, I told myself that I'll start working out again - pilates, yoga, squash, boxercise - I don't like going to the gym. Sadly, I've yet found the time to do so.
Since I'm sitting here dragging my feet about getting into the shower so I can actually go to the gym and sign my butt up, I thought I'd answer some comments. You know, a little more time on the computer. I'm not procrastinating or anything. I'm just conscientious.
Ahem.
Sweet Irene - I'm hoping that if I put it on the blog I'll shame myself into actually doing it. We'll see if I can find any loopholes.
ciara - I would love to be fitness buddies. That would be great. Let's both think about how we could set it up.
kaycie - We have a treadmill and weights out in our studio, but I never use them. The whole place is a mess with all my hubands hobby stuff and I just don't like being out there. It's hard though, isn't it, when all the equipment is looking you in the face?
ped crossing - you're welcome for the award. You deserve it! I like the social aspect of the gym too, but I almost never meet friends there. I like the idea that people around me are doing the same thing, and just the fact that I have to make the effort to go to the gym makes me try harder.
willowtree - you sound like every male in my house. Canines included.
dumdad - but you bike ! That's so aerobic and good for you. And you love doing it to boot.
flowerpot - my dogs run around the yard like wild things, but when we take them on walks they poop out. Too funny.
wakeup - Wow. Congrats on your dedication. I've always loved the gym too. I just like the whole process and at the end I promise myself a steam sauna (which I love better than life itself). I was always a jock growing up and have that lanky frame underneath to prove it. It's just covered with marshmallow goo at the moment.
laurie - LALALALALALALALALALALALALALA!!!!!!!!
Got so carried away yelling at laurie that I accidentally hit publish. Where was I? Oh yes.
swearing mother - sweet! Do you want to do something with ciara and I to keep ourselves accountable and cake free? Wouldn't that be fun?
jo - I like the whole pedometer thing. And it really is kind of painless. I do love tennis, but as it gets colder and wetter here it isn't really an option. I even looked into a new place in town with indoor courts and a fitness center. My hair is still standing straight up after hearing the membership fees. That's partly what got me going here with the gym. They give a discount for hospital employees. Half off the signup fee and half of the monthly dues. It's a sign...
jen- I fall off of the ellipitcal trainers. Don't know why, but I do. And I don't mind a little jiggle. It's the seismic jiggle that bothers me.
bella - it's hard to find the time. There's always something else to convince yourself you should be doing. I hope it takes this time and I stick it out.
Good job!!! We've got a mini home gym area in the basement with the TV and lots of movies for incentive for trotting on the treadmill or slinging around the weights and doing the sit-ups. My incentive is that the only time I am allowed to watch my Netflix rentals is when the body is exercising.
Oooh aren't you brave? Good luck! I have been going to Aquafit on Tuesdays for a few weeks now. I don't know if it's doing any good but we sure have a laugh! :)
RC well done - and good luck. Go girl! Work that body!
For me, exercise has to have a point (apart from the keeping fit bit, obviously.) So, the only things I can do have to be competitive - racket sports work well for me. You like tennis too don't you? How strong is your forehand? You think we could have a transatlantic game?
But the best exercise is sprinting to the cake shop or wrestling small children for the last bar of chocolate in the shop.
Mya x
Well good luck with that!
I could really do with joining you. I'm the biggest now that I've been in my entire life. My mum keeps making comments that the sun's gone in every time I bend down. Even the farmer looks confused when trying to reach for the love handles.
Anyway, keep at it and I'll be with you!
Best wishes, Crystal xx
I would love to join a gym...there's one fairly close with a lap pool, which is my choice of exercise. However, Mr. Pi is still considering whether or not we should spend the money. Since Mr. Pi jiggles as much as I do, I think it will be money well spent if I can convince him.
However, if you continue to use the blasphemous words ice cream on your blog, I will never, ever stop jiggling. Ever.
That's wonderful - they ``cool their jets'' while you blog. I'm a father of three and I'm told that's the way it should be.
Don't ask me about MY homework - okay?
Ha ha. this makes me snicker. I just cancelled my gym membership.
RC: I need all the help I can get, sounds like a good plan to join forces.
It was someone's birthday at the office today - need I say more?
Here for you, babe. I'm starting a Weight Loss Wednesday segment when I get back from my trip. 49 pounds down, only 21 to go!
The book You: On a Diet is pure gold. Seriously.
Blogging isn't for the honest. Blogging is for those who like creating virtual lives that have a tenuous connection with their real one. So don't look to us bloggers for your honesty, girl.
we have an elliptical trainer in our basement, which i actually enjoy using.
however. the question is, when?
here's my day: up at 5:30 am. ok, 5:45.
read papers. drink coffee. feed dogs. walk dogs. shower. eat breakfast go to work.
work from 9 to 6 or 6:30 or 6:45 or thereabouts.
go home. walk dogs. now it's 7:15 or 7:30 or 7:45.
have a glass of wine.
have some dinner.
collapse in bed.
when do i do the elliptical trainer?????
Good for you RC! I wish you luck with it. I am stuggling with moving my ass. I mean as in exercise. I move constantly at work and doing housework, but I have 2 treadmills set up in the basement and a few other things, and I just can't seem to get on them consistently. Even, if it is just for 20 mins. a day. I don't get it, cause I feel better when I do, have more energy yet I am always so tired when I get home. It is a vicious circle. Or I am just making excuses. I will keep trying!
So, you know this is my week off and one of my plans was to walk every morning after taking the kids to school...Well tomorrow is Wednesday; maybe I'll get a walk in. I don't know why, it doesn't take that much time. Yesterday I went shopping for new clothes for my new job and today I cleaned the closet in our bedroom instead. Very satisfying.
Diana - I like the incentive thing too. Mine is that I get to sit in the sauna after I work out. Have I mentioned how much I loooooove the sauna?
akela - well, we'll see if I'm brave or if I'm stupid. AquaFit sounds like fun - I know a fair number of gals who swear by water classes.
mya - actually my backhand is better than my forehand, but I'll take you on. Your serve. As far as exercise with a point, I've always liked wrestling the cork out of the bottle.
crystal - well, now, that's not very nice of your mom. I'd be thinking of a not very nice comeback if I were you!
pixelpi - ice cream blasphemous? Blasphemy! Yeah, the FG jiggles too, but in different places. He has been riding his bike lately though. sigh.
david mcmahon - thanks for coming back by. my kids cool their jets a lot. I think it's the natural order of things.
stepping over - did you get tired of it or were you not really using it or what? I actually canceled a membership at this very gym two years ago, yet here I am again.
swearing mother - let's do it! I'll start...WHAT did you eat?!
kimberly - well, that's going to be cool. I'll have to check that out. You really have lost a LOT of weight. I'll check out the book. Congrats!!
iota - are you suggesting that every thing I write down is not the absolute truth exactly the way it happened?? Okay, so maybe I exaggerate a little...
laurie - that is a nasty schedule. Could you fit it in in the morning? Read the paper on the elliptical? I would fall off, but you're probably more coordinated.
eileen - you've hit the crux of it. I feel a million times better when I exercise - more even moods, more energy, less of a biatch. It's just getting off my ass and doing it.
my two cents - so did you get any cool clothes for your new job? At least you're getting stuff done. But do take some time to just sit, huh?
I set myself on a walking regime a couple of months ago to prepare for a trip. I'm back now and trying to keep up but it's very hard to do it regularly. It seems like almost everything else takes priority in my mind.
I applaud your gym decision. The investment itself gives priority value to the enterprise. Maybe I'll sign up for Curves again.
Altaglow - hi, mom! you're right, the fact that I'm shelling money out for it is a big motivator. I was really surprised though at how good a deal they give the hospital employees.
I think Curves would be a great idea.
